Play culture with hwajeon.(azalea flower pancakes)
Play culture with hwajeon. (azalea flower pancakes)
Our people like to eat, drink, and play.
In particular, it was a nation that valued eating, but it was not just eating.
There were foods that had to be eaten every season,
and they thought that if they didn't eat them, something bad would happen.
Even now, in spring, don't you pack food and travel around the mountains and fields?
High compensation is basic for birthdays, weddings, and rituals.
Now, April is the time for the season to change, with spring in earnest.
What did our ancestors eat and enjoy in this colorful and beautiful season?
Let's go on a food trip in this beautiful season.
Our people played elegantly according to the season.
This is called seasonal customs or seasonal rituals.
Several holidays were decided because the seasons and life were linked,
and on that day, family and neighbors shared courtesy with each other with delicious food.
This is called Jeolsik, and the food cooked as seasonal food was called "Days Food."
Many of the seasonal customs were food-prepared, eaten,
and enjoyed, and most of the events handed down in modern times are also related to food.
Sesi food was made using seasonal food ingredients as much as possible,
so it had a strong meaning of a mealcloth, that is, a medicine to protect the body,
such as Bokjung's health bath or Yongbongtang.
This was a way to sustain health by controlling physiological changes according to seasonal changes.
Our ancestors did not just eat and play, so they faithfully recorded it.
These include "Gyeongdo Magazine", "Yeolyangsegi", and "Dongguksegi",
which are the Joseon Dynasty customs journals recorded by men.
Men in the Joseon Dynasty were as interested in food as current male gourmets.
This is because the symbolic use of food for rituals due to the influence of Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty,
which values rituals, was an important area in which the knowledge and power of all men were exercised.
Food is the key to the ritual.
The food of the time was the product of the agricultural culture.
It was derived from an agricultural cultural event in which seeds are sown,
cultivated, and crops are collected during harvest.
For example, spring comes at the end of December or early January of the lunar calendar,
and this day means a good day when spring begins,
so we supplemented the vitamins we lacked during the long winter
by making and eating "Osinban" with fresh green ears.
It is a spicy vegetable seasoned with Oompa, Metgat, Seunggeomcho, Turnip, and ginger,
and has the effect of stimulating appetite.
It was prohibited in Buddhism and Taoism, but in general folklore,
it was regarded as a food containing the energy of the whole universe,
which symbolizes harmony and fusion. In other words,
it is a symbolic food that values the body, the central philosophy of our food, and harmony.
Looking at the seasonal customs, the diet of the working class,
who enjoyed seasonal vegetables, fruits, rice cakes, and Korean sweets that they normally ate in need,
is well revealed during the holidays.
As such, food in the days has the meaning of supplementing nutrition.
In short, in rite of passage, protein supplementation through meat is strong,
and in seasonal ritual, carbohydrates and vitamins through eating rice cakes,
seasonal fruits, and vegetables are strong. Like the rite of passage,
seasonal food is a ritual that enshrines the gods they serve,
and has the character of preparing and serving food together.
Then, let's take a look at April's food. When spring began,
I made food using flowers blooming in spring to supplement nutrition and play.
In March of the lunar calendar, when spring begins,
there were especially many events related to eating and enjoying food.
March 3rd of the lunar calendar is the third day, and on this day,
azalea flowers were picked and glutinous rice powder was kneaded to make round rice cakes to make hwajeon.
It is also made by kneading azalea flowers in mung bean powder.
Noodles are also made with mung bean starch,
and mung bean powder was added with red water to make water floated in honey water and served as food of the time.
In addition, I made and ate screen, Tangpyeongchae, azalea fruit salad, and Hyangaedan.
Alcohol cannot be left out, but I made and drank Dugyeonju, Song Soonju, and Gwahaju.
On the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar, Hwajeonnori culture.
Hwajeonnori was like a spring picnic for old women.
On March 3rd of the lunar calendar, women prepare glutinous rice powder
and salt along with a pot lid and settle in a scenic place.
When one person first sings about the beautiful scenery of spring,
others sing a series of songs in response.
When you sing a song like this, you end up getting married and solving each other's regrets.
On the way to and from Hwajeon and Dapga,
they make pancakes with pre-prepared Buncheol and glutinous rice dough,
pick azalea petals scattered everywhere, decorate them, and eat Hwajeon and play.
Choi Myung-hee's epic novel Honbul,
which meticulously recorded the folklore and traditions of Jeolla-do,
describes Jeolla-do's famous Hwajeonnori played at that time by devoting several pages.
Interestingly, this slash-and-burn exhibition was held at this slash-and-burn exhibition.
The author contains the full text of a woman's hwajeon
who won the first place at the women's writing contest.
Through this, you can find out how to make hwajeon and even
the joys and sorrows of traditional women symbolized by hwajeon.
Hwajeonga begins as follows.
People in the language world, listen to my argument.
It's a life that's like wealth and a life that's like a candle.
It's funny and reasonable to think about the world.
On the other side of the mountain, the tombs that are high and low are some of the heroes of heaven and earth.
It's someone who is absolute and we'll be like that if we die.
Play, play, play. You can't play when you get old.
There are no red flowers on the 10th, and when the moon is full, lean.
A spring dream. Our lives... No, play and what?
Is there another good thing about playing outside Hwajeon?
Let's go play Hwajeon, my friend's house.
Even if you like Dano holidays, there are no flowers. No, it's good
Even if you like Chuseok holidays, fall foliage makes you feel sad.
I like the Lunar New Year holidays, but the light of the falling stream is clear.
On the 3rd day of the lunar new year, flowers bloom and birds cry.
Did the swallows who went to Gangnam come back with flowers?
Did the flowers return last year following the warm wind of the swallow's wings?
Sancheone vegetation with fresh energy from Cheonji Sangbong Peak.
In the silky valley of Geumsugangsan Mountain,
We became flowers and had a great day.
What else is there besides hwajeon? Let's go play hwajeon.
In addition to writing, there is also a custom painting that shows seasonal customs well.
It is Kim Jun-geun's Wind Speed, which depicts the scenery of a spring outing.
In this custom painting, women who make azalea flower pancakes and enjoy spring games are well described.
In Joseon society, where women's social activities were limited,
women were allowed to freedom and make food on this day.
In this way, our people recognized that there were four distinct seasons and enjoyed the culture without forgetting it.
It is literally a people who were good at writing, painting, and dancing.
I found and enjoyed the meaning of each season of spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
In particular, it is like a food race and a play race because it did not miss eating and enjoying seasonal food.
Isn't creativity, a virtue necessary for the 21st century, ultimately coming from eating well, drinking well,
and enjoying well?
